How to take a passport photo at home — properly.

For a front-facing camera, keep the lens 16–20 inches (40–50 cm) from your face. With a rear camera, ask someone to step back 4–6 feet so your head fills roughly 70% of the frame height.
Keep your eyes wide open, mouth closed, expression neutral. No grins, no tilts, no looking off to the side. The consulate wants a calm, deadpan face — not a wedding photo.
Stand a few feet in front of a plain wall, facing a window in soft daylight. Avoid overhead lamps, harsh sun, or shadows behind you — they'll trigger the compliance flag even after AI cleanup.

US passport photos must be taken within the last 6 months and reflect your current appearance. If your look has changed significantly (for example, major weight change, facial surgery, or a new gender presentation), use a newer photo even if your last one was under 6 months old.
